This course has been designed specifically to support the on-going development of practising teachers of English who are not native speakers. It will also help consolidate and extend knowledge and skills of teachers who have already taken CELTA and/or ICELT as well as help teachers who are considering doing DELTA.

We are the Institute for teachers of English and run different courses to cater for those who want to be aware of new technologies and approaches. 
The 24 hour course covers a full area of language and lexis as well as the insight analysis of the most common language structures. This language course is an intensive one where every session will be a new cut insight the language. 
 
You will fully enjoy 6 sessions of 4 academic hours each with our Cambridge qualified tutor Gary Nixon. 
You will get a certificate at the end showing your level and the number of hours you have done.

 

The sessions will enable you to:

  • keep you up-to-date with developments in language teaching methodology
  • refine and expand your range of teaching techniques and procedures
  • encourage you to reflect on your personal teaching context and practice
  • develop your own language and language awareness
  • share ideas with other practising teachers
  • gain confidence

Introductions

 

Basics/Review:

  • questions to guide language analysis
  • phonology: words & connected speech

Future Time:

  • analysis and use of different forms to refer to future time

 

Phonology:

  • prominence
  • pitch range

 

Perfect Aspect:

  • application of analysis skills
  • analysis of present perfect verb forms

Continuous Aspect:

  • analysis verb forms using the continuous aspect
  • Identification of fundamental principles

Break

Session 2*

17:00 – 18:30

Phonology & Speaking:

  • application of features of connected speech
  • oral fluency practice speaking about neighborhoods

 

Vocabulary and Speaking:

  • analysis and use of lexis related to drinks

 

Discourse Analysis

  • receiver orientation
  • discourse markers in spoken and written language

Functions:

  • analysis of functional language (chunking & phonology)
  • application of the above: inviting

Summary of Learning:

  • being a reflective practitioner
  • a model of reflection
  • action planning

 

Farewell

 

*All session will use current EFL methodology and will give you examples of student-centered practice and activities.

 

The sessions will use the methodology, procedures and techniques you will learn about so that you will be able to gain first hand experience of their application.

Entry requirements:

* be currently working as a teacher of English

* have a minimum level of English of B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. (This is the equivalent of approximately IELTS 5.5 or FCE.)
